The Texas Libertarian Party presents a forum: On Liberty and Urban Planning

Urban planning plays a critical role in each of our lives and yet it remains out of the view of most citizens. Indeed, it is a complex and confusing process involving a web of nonprofits, NGOs, and local government organizations further complicated by federal guidelines and grants.

But the questions of urban planning are fundamental:What are our community’s goals? How can we promote them? And do planners have these same goals and interests?

“Sadly, there is almost no light shed on urban planning policies - policies which affect the day-to-day lives of citizens, their property values, and their property rights. Questions about the democratic nature of the process, the unforeseen consequences and the beneficiaries of contracts and rezoning all need to be asked,” says Caroline K. Gorman, Libertarian Party of Texas member and debate moderator.

The Libertarian Party of Texas seeks to facilitate discussion on this important topic and suggest new solutions. Join us on Saturday, September 7 at the Marriot (3300 Champions Circle) in Fort Worth for our forum: On Liberty and Urban Planning. We’ll host a social hour from 6 to 7 p.m. and then the panel discussion from 7 to 8:30.

We will feature four notable panelists:

Barry Klein is President of the Houston Property Rights Association and advises small government activists in ten Texas cities on amending local home rule charters.

Randy Dunning has been involved in Texas politics since 1988. In 2002, Randy was elected to the Garland City Council and was reelected to that position in 2005. During his tenure as a City Council member, Randy was elected Mayor Pro Tem and appointed Chairman of two Council Subcommittees. In 2011, Randy was invited to Iowa to train the leadership team of Strong America Now.

John Basham is President of Texans for Government Transparency and an activist advocating responsible water management policies and denouncing government involvement in economic development. He is professionally employed as the Senior Meteorologist for the Storm Spotter Project.

Vince May is an expert on transportation. He advocates user fees, as opposed to tolls, as a better source of funding for roads.

The Libertarian Party of Texas (LP Texas) was founded in 1973 and seeks to uphold the principles of liberty at the state level. Last year, LP Texas placed more than 120 candidates on the ballot, five of whom received over a million votes statewide. In the past ten years, LP Texas has seen steady growth in the percentage of votes going to Libertarian candidates. Please see www.LPTexas.org for more information. ### Please contact Caroline K.
